1951 — Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez, The Lonely Hearts Killers, are executed in the electric chair at New York's Sing Sing Prison. The notorious couple seduced, robbed, and murdered women who placed personal ads. Fernandez wore a black toupee to conceal a serious accidental head injury that left him bald and with serious headaches. In 1947, Fernandez met an older woman in a lonely-hearts club and dated her until he could loot her bank account. He next responded to an ad placed by Beck, an extremely overweight and reportedly unattractive woman when she joined a lonely-hearts club advertised in a romance magazine. After a brief affair Fernandez fell in love and confessed his original plan to Beck, who decided to join his scheme. For two years Beck posed as Fernandez’s sister as he seduced older women, robbed them, and killed them. The pair attempted to plead insanity with tales of bizarre sexual exploits that didn’t convince the jury; their story was later the subject of the sordid 1970 film, The Honeymoon Killers.

2004 — The Indonesian parliament considers a proposed anti-pornography bill that includes a ban on public kissing. If passed, violators could be jailed for up to five years or face a £15,000 fine. The bill also proposes bans on public nudity, erotic dances and sex parties, with jail terms ranging from three to ten years, and two years for watching a sex show.

2005 — The case of Arkansas man Albert K. Smith, who is accused of shooting to death his ex-wife's boyfriend, is catapulted into a state of hilarity. Earlier, prosecutors hoping to find a witness to the murder issued subpoenas to anyone who was in contact with Albert during the time he spent in jail, including 5-year-old Murphy Smith, to whom Albert sent a letter from prison. Murphy Smith is brought to the courthouse today by Albert's brother, but is denied entrance because of a courthouse policy barring dogs from entering the premises. Yes that’s right. They subpoenaed a dog.
