See, "ad lib" is a word that means "speak spontaneously", or in other words you get to make up what you’re saying on the spot! A "mad lib" would be quite a wacky ad lib, wouldn't it? And since the name Mad Libs® "belongs" to the Putnam Publishing Group, we’ve replaced the word "mad" with the word "zany". Because stealing an idea from somebody else is wrong. Unless you change it just a little bit.
